There are, one occasionally reads, several companies that offer insurance against Abduction by Aliens or UFOs (the latter, I think would be easier to prove). Google turns up what appears to be an AP report of a Lloyd’s of London subsidiary ceasing to offer its Alien Abduction insurance because it had to pay $1 million per “death by aliens” to 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult.

“Air & Space” Magazine gave mention of the “UFO Abduction & Casualty Insurance Company” of Altamonte Springs, Florida, which offered $10 million policies for around $7.95, and there’s double-indemnity if there’s the aliens impregnate you, eat you, or “fail to practice safe sex.” I suppose if they try to fight your claim, there’s a lawyer in Germany who’ll take the case!

Yeah, right. Most bogus plaintiffs have no self respect and claim that their own idiocy should have been anticipated by the defendant. Therre is always someone out there with no shame.

Okay, now I truly believe that “anybody can sue anybody for anything”. This disgrace to the legal profession should be disbarred (don’t know if they have such a thing in Germany) and jailed for public idiocy.

Germany has a high lawyer to population ratio, as we do. This is a good rent seeking, job generation tactic. The memory is common. The majority of alien abuse victims are likely to be mentally ill.

Alien abduction is no more silly than the accepted, core doctrine of torts. Foreseeability of an accident results in a duty of the defendant to the plaintiff. The lawyer believes accidents can be predicted. Why not alien abduction?
