Your statement about the plea deal of Langston being favorable deserves comment. It is easy to sit back in a judgmental attitude as to whether a plea is soft or hard, but I would suggest that to give up the profession and career that had been built all a man's and his father's life is, in itself, a hard punishment. Also, it is easy to forget that each of these lawyers who have been talked about so much are not the menance to society that have been alluded to in posts. They have worked hard , they have been generous to their families, churches, schools and also to their communities which have counted on them and have depended upon them for help for many years. You folks from the big city may not believe this, but when a small town lawyer has success, the whole community benefits as money often goes into the local economy, builds schools, finances scholarships and provides general help. So when gauging the effect of disbarrment and imprisonment upon a lawyer who has made a grave error, it is never a soft plea and it never effects just the person sentenced.
I cannot defend any illegal action which took place, but in an understanding of all those convicted, remember that a lawyer would never offer inducements to any judge who they knew would never take them. It is a sad day for our system when an attorney feels the playing field must be leveled in unfortunate ways in order for their client to compete.

A reader writes to say that Shane Langston and Joey Langston are brothers -- something I've heard, too, but which I've been unable to verify definitively through search engines.
