For all I know you’d think it were equally funny to joke about the fact that I don’t eat pork on religious grounds (we can touch it though).

Was he or was he not made that promise? That would seem to matter, as would knowing what the “reasonable accommodation” standard, or its equivalent, is in the UK (I assume there is one).
