I learned that I was in a union after my advisor went to increase my abysmal &quot;union-negotiated&quot; stipend out of his own pocket and discovered that it wasn&#039;t possible under the union contract.  I tried to get out but they demanded a lump sum buyout that I couldn&#039;t afford.  So they parasitized 1% of my salary until I graduated, which is what unionization of graduate students is intended to do.]]></description>
