If driverless vehicles are saving lives, I really do believe that everything will sort itself out nicely. Less injuries and deaths (and property damage, actually) on our highways will save all of us a lot of money. If it leads to some what are sure to be complex product liability cases, that is a cost we can easily absorb compared to the human and economic carnage we endure now.

"I give non-autonomous cars about 20 years before they are banned."

I give autonomous cars about 50 years before they will be production ready. Another 50 years after that before there is enough production to make a ban on non-autonomous cars feasible.

Governments would really love to see driverless cars. They would all have to have "features" to allow the government to see where every car is, where it has been, and the ability to cause any vehicle to stop and lock all the doors. The govt will do whatever it takes to make this happen. As soon as possible. I give non-autonomous cars about 20 years before they are banned.
