Prestigious honorific? Marketing gimmick? Eric Turkewitz does some digging, and also passes along this tangential but memorable anecdote:

My father likes to tell the story of the first lawyer to lose a million dollar malpractice case in New York. Rather than hurting his reputation, he became the million dollar go-to lawyer for the big cases.

  • i remember several years ago there was a shooting spree at a little known law school. i want to say it was called Appalachan law school. anyway, next thing you know, their applications are through the roof. Why? because in the coverage of the school, people learned that this professor went to harvard and this one went to another good school and so on.

    Sheesh, talk about the idea that there is no such thing as bad publicity…
