“Municipal extortion and full employment for lawyers”

Local governments are often open to “amending” speeding tickets, but in a manner that reflects their financial self-interest — and also pays dividends for the prosperity of the local bar. [Mike Sykuta, TotM]

  • Its not quite that bad in Wisconsin. You usually don’t need a lawyer to negotiate the municipal speeding ticket. But, for instance, a local municipal will ding you for a ticket of $88 and 4 points (hey, I really was guilty of the infraction). But, if you talk to their attorney, he will amend the ticket to a non moving violation, but it will cost you $120 bucks. And if you look at the regional district court website, they tell you what amount of every ticket is used to support the court.

  • Had this happen to me, once in West Virginia, for a U-Turn violation. The judge (also the mayor of the town) took me into the back room and decided that it was really a problem associated with my turn signal… But the fine was the same…

  • Oh, and there were no lawyers involved – why drive up costs unnecessarily if the town isn’t going to get anything out of it?…
